They are more easily manipulated than a corded model, it is simply easier to manipulate a model into the correct position when not concerned about the cord – this is of particular benefit when cutting your own hair, beard, or nasal, ear and eyebrow hair.

They are more portable – without the need to be near to a mains supply.

Hair trimmers are often used in a bathroom or near running water – extra caution is needed with any mains powered appliances in such circumstances.   Some cordless hair trimmers can be safely used in a shower.

Considerations

An underpowered trimmer will not cut the hair “cleanly” and instead the hair will be pulled as the cut is made – something that can be very uncomfortable.   It is important to choose a model that has enough power for its intended task – it is better to have more than is needed rather than too little.

Battery life should be sufficient to cut the entire head of hair in one go – and there should be no appreciable loss of power in that time.  You can opt to have reserve batteries, but it is better to have too much rather than too little battery life.

You should look for a trimmer that has a number of different comb guards. The guide combs come in different sizes and are placed over the blades to alter just how close the cutting blades can get to the hair and in this way you can adjust the length of the hair after cutting.  The more guide combs, the more choice you have, making it much easier to cut the hair to the preferred style.

A model with a taper lever will allow further adjustment without the need to change the comb guide.   The comb guides can be used one after the other to gradually shorten the hair, until you are quite sure that the hair has been cut to the desired length.  You will become used the length you prefer after a few cuts and will not need to do this each time.

There are Different types of blade:  platinum, stainless steel and titanium and chrome.   Of these, generally titanium will resist water and rust longer and platinum will remain sharper for longer.

For increased versatility it is a good idea to choose a trimmer that has a variety of attachments that enable it to be used for a number of different jobs.  So the same trimmer might be used for beard as well as ear, nose and eyebrow trimming.

Useful accessories include:

• a cape that will fit closely to the neck so that hair does fall onto your clothes;

• a pair of good sharp scissors;

• cleaning brushes;

• a storage pouch that conveniently holds the trimmer and all accessories is important.

Maintenance is very straightforward.  Trimmers are almost always provided with a small brush for any hair from the bales and an amount of lubricating oil – which can be inexpensively replaced.  It is a very simple matter to remove any hair – and best to do it before putting the trimmer away after use.   Applying a little oil also before use is a good idea.

A cordless hair trimmer is a great tool for trimming your hair to the style you prefer – but you will also want to take proper care of your hair to ensure that it always looks its best.

The following hair care tips will help you keep your hair in good condition:

• adopt a healthy lifestyle; your hair will reflect your general health condition;

• avoid smoking – preventing smoke from being trapped with the hair;

• use a hair dryer only when unavoidable – instead use a towel to gently dry the hair and let any remaining moisture dry naturally;

• if using a hair dryer, ensure that the dryer is set to a cool setting so that the hair does not get hot – and keep the dryer moving;

• use warm water to wash the hair – nothing hotter that you can comfortable stand beneath in a shower;

• brush and comb wet hair as little as possible – let it dry first

• free any tangles with fingers and untangle the ends of the hair first and gently.

• do not use plastic combs and brushes – they generate static electricity

• when using a hair conditioner do not apply it close to the scalp – there are natural oils here.
